Program summer 2023

Dear Asheville families,
with Grow Abroad bringing students from all over the world to our hometown, we provide lots of opportunities for intercultural learning and sharing for you and your family.  If you decide to host, we offer free programming for American host siblings. However, you don’t have to host to take advantage. Our program is open to any local family in the greater Asheville area! Activities run on a weekly basis from the end of June, throughout July and into August with all activities and excursions included.

What to Expect
On a rolling basis throughout our summer of programming, we will feature weekly
Language/Country Cultural Adventures, representing different countries, such as Spain, Germany, and more! Our staff will mix beginner's language lessons infused with elements of the history and culture of their country, such as:
showing photos/movies, cooking cultural food, interactive experiences with current international students and/or pen pal/skype sessions with our past international students,
during which they can practice their new language skills, ask questions, among other fun activities...
all making it like a "trip" to this foreign country.
You can expect a lot of fun, hands-on experiential learning. Students should be able to go home with a beginner's grasp of their selected language, equipped with greetings, navigational questions, and relevant vocabulary, and a wealth of cultural knowledge on various regions of their selected country. As if they'd spent their summer there!

Language

- Introduction to the Countries of our Visiting Students!

Some days are dedicated to language and culture. The language options will depend on the nationalities of our visiting students from abroad. The foreign language options will be on a rotation throughout the summer, in an attempt to offer as many languages as our visiting students speak! Our staff mix beginner's language lessons with history and culture of their country, showing photos/movies, cooking cultural food,  interactive experiences with current international students where they can practice their new language skills or ask questions , among other fun activities... all making it like a "trip" to this foreign country. You can expect a lot of fun, hands-on experiential learning.

We expect the participating local US day campers to be between 9 and 16 years old.

Activities

- The best Asheville has to offer: From Pisgah National Forest,  Bowling to White Water Rafting!

Each week throughout the summer is filled with activities and excursions.  Often, we stay local and make use of the great options Asheville has to offer; ex. Sky Zone Trampoline Park, AMC Bowling, Regal Biltmore Cinema. We take the local  and int. students on  a stroll through downtown, shopping & more. We also explore the surrounding wilderness parks such as Dupont and Pisgah, activities including hikes and cool swims at  waterfalls.

Volunteering

- Supporting our Local Community

Asheville provides many opportunities to get engaged in meaningful volunteering opportunities. Grow Abroad brings the visiting students and US day campers into contact with a variety of local non-profits; from Manna Food Bank, Asheville Poverty Initiative, Bounty & Soul, and Conserving Carolina, just to name a few!
It is our utmost goal to introduce visiting students to the USA in a very genuine, true-to-life way. Volunteering gives students a deeper insight into life in the area, and the ability to participate in the local community. We believe this exposure is equally as beneficial to our local students, giving them first-hand experience and knowledge of their own community. Therefore we appreciate the participation and  contribution of our  local students and families.
